As weird names for exotic fruit go, “Snot Apple” ranks right up there with the weirdest of them all. It certainly doesn’t have you rushing to grab a fruit and eat it. But its other common name, the “African Chewing Gum tree”, gives a more accurate description of what this fruit is like to eat. In this episode, shot within the spray of the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) shares a few titbits on the unmistakeable Azanza Garckeana tree. He also reveals how, in Nigeria, the fruit is revered, under the name of Goron Tula, for its potent aphrodisiac properties. So if you thought “snot” and “aphrodisiac” couldn’t be combined in one sentence, check this one out.
