Friedrich Welwitsch was an Austrian medical doctor who switched career in his mid-30s and became a botanist. Whereupon he moved to Lisbon and was hired by the Portuguese government to document new botanical species in Africa (nice job if you can get it!). His most famous discovery was Welwitschia mirabilis from the Namib desert, but there are many other plants named after him, including this one, the Honey-Scented Protea (Protea welwitschii). Join Gus (the African Plant Hunter) as he ventures into the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe to look for Proteas and other plants. And dream of being hired to document new botanical species in Africa……..
