It’s a very human trait to draw inspiration from nature. And few sights are more inspiring than a beautiful tree in its natural setting. In this episode, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) travels to Hwange National Park in the far west of Zimbabwe to find a spectacular specimen of an umbrella tree, Vachellia tortilis. In the process, he uncovers the tale of one of the area’s more colourful recent inhabitants, Percy Durban Crewe. An emblematic African tree, a famous wildlife park, an eccentric moonshiner. All the ingredients of an epic novel. Oh wait, somebody already wrote it……..
