The Resurrection Bush (Myrothamnus flabellifolia), so named because of its ability to desiccate completely in drought and then come back to life in the presence of moisture, contains many compounds of interest. These include several antioxidants, the carbohydrate trehalose, the glycoside arbutin and various tannins and flavonoids. All of these play a role in protecting the plant cells during desiccation, and all have potential as active ingredients in skincare formulations. In this episode, Gus the African Plant Hunter looks in some detail at these compounds and their modes of action.
